Dental Crowns

About This Treatment

A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that encases a damaged, weakened, or heavily restored tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. At Marketplace Smiles, Dr. Wilson and Dr. Fu recommend crowns when a tooth has suffered significant decay, a large failing filling, a crack, or has been treated with root canal therapy — situations where a filling alone cannot provide adequate protection. Crowns are fabricated from high-strength ceramic or porcelain-fused materials that closely replicate the look and function of natural teeth, and are designed to withstand the full forces of chewing for many years.

Frequently Asked Questions

A crown typically requires two appointments: the first for tooth preparation, impressions, and placement of a temporary crown; the second — usually 2–3 weeks later — for fitting and cementing the final crown. During the interim period, the temporary crown protects the prepared tooth and allows you to function normally.

Modern all-ceramic and porcelain crowns are fabricated to match the shade, shape, and translucency of your surrounding teeth — in most cases, it is impossible to distinguish a well-made crown from a natural tooth. Dr. Wilson and Dr. Fu work with skilled dental laboratories and take detailed shade records to ensure the final restoration integrates seamlessly with your smile.

The tooth and surrounding gum are fully anaesthetised before any preparation begins, so the procedure itself is painless. Some patients experience mild sensitivity or soreness in the days following preparation — this is normal and typically managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Once the final crown is cemented, most patients report no ongoing discomfort.
